Senate Approves Delay in Unemployment Tax Hikes

01.13.10

The Indiana Senate passed legislation that would delay until 2011 new payroll taxes on employers to help restore the state's bankrupt unemployment insurance fund. Democrats withdrew support for the measure after language was added to allow employers to dispute a decision to award benefits by sending a form to the state. Network Indiana/WIBC report Senator Karen Tallian (D-4) says allowing an "appeal sheet" would lengthen already unacceptable delays in benefits. Senate Tax and Fiscal Policy Chairman Brandt Hershman says any delays in the process would not be the result of the appeals process.
