State Ed Board Recommends Salary, Hiring Freezes

12.21.09

The Indiana State Board of Education has submitted recommendations on how school corporations can deal with funding cuts, without teacher layoffs. The board has also asked Governor Mitch Daniels to direct the State Budget Agency to make enough cuts to avoid a new round of reductions next year. The panel has sent a letter to the governor with recommendations that include closing underutilized buildings, reducing or eliminating travel expenses and freezing salaries and hirings. Governor Mitch Daniels describes the recommendations as "a host of commons sense options."
